Photo of the Week: Home Cooking on a Rocket Stove

About this photo

Doña Helena cooks a mouthwatering soup on an Ecolenca rocket stove, produced by our partners at Ecofogon in Honduras. The Rocket Stove and its variations are the most simple stove design used by Trees, Water & People in Latin America. It is also the least expensive cookstove design, as a Rocket stove can be housed in a masonry container or metal drum. It also incorporates the “Rocket elbow”, the heart of the cookstove, but is not vented and is therefore intended for outdoor use. A rocket stove achieves efficient combustion by ensuring that there is sufficient air draft into the fire, controlled use of fuel, complete combustion, and efficient use of heat. Rocket stove models include the masonry Justa and Ecolenca as well as the metal Ecobarril.
